It is very difficult for people to place any preferences for modern Nollywood films over the classic ones. This time, there is a healthy ongoing debate over those old ones that mostly had University setting and the modern that appears to be “high school things”. Before we go any further, which do you prefer to watch and why?
Those of you who grew up watching old Nollywood movies would have enjoyed watching Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Ramsey Noah, Ernest Asuzu, Jim Iyke and Rita Dominic entertain in university settings. They really lit up so many screens with fans refusing to even blink while watching these actors. It was usually of cult, romance, you get the picture, right?
However, the modern Nollywood movies appear to be centered around high school. Several actresses with far older ages are usually common for that level. They are seen trying to fit into such roles while planted around youthful ones. Peace Onuoha and Chizoba Nwokoye are among those who recently starred in high school movies. However, the likes of Mercy Kenneth and Adaeze Onuigbo have played the roles of high school students effectively.
Meanwhile, you might want to look out for Iyabo Ojo’s daughter, Priscilla Ojo and Eni Adeoluwa in the high school series ‘All of Us’.
Nollywood lovers have taken to social media to make their choices between old Nollywood movies that had university settings and those modern ones with high school settings.
A certain @_SLYTAUREAN wrote on Twitter;
“Bring back old Nollywood that mostly had University settings. All these high school things are pissing me off.”
These was the catalysts for the reactions.
@Views09: “most people had the best time of their lives in highschool and refuse to let go of that idea of themselves hence that’s the reason”.
◒ x Zebulun (♟,♟l): “Uni was for Funke Akindele, Gabriel Afolayan etc Nollywood set of 2010’sBoya this one’s woukd grow into it And to think we don’t even call it High school in Nigeria, secondary school ti wa okay”.
@bearzamus: “i read somewhere that the reason a lot of shows are based in high school and not college is because it’s more of a universal experience and can reach a wider audience. a lot of people won’t watch something they can’t relate to unfortunately”.
@TheGiziEffect: “Only Old Nollywood truly captured Nigerian Uni allow new nollywood to do posh High School”.
@KashiefWynter3: “Because high school is filled with drama and the series can be stretched out eventually into the college lifestyle. Win win”.
@Mel_unchained: “I miss all those old nollywood University movies about cultism and prostitution usually starring jim iyke, ini edo, emeka ike etc
We’ve lost that part of nollywood”.
@CannaInfuseIt: “Because many people don’t go to college but majority of the world went to high school and can relate in some way shape or form. Maybe you’re not the intended audience? When I was in highschool I wanted teen dramas with teen plots because I was tired of watching adul t shows”
@pman4us: “So no real teenagers that can act? Una don dey behave like Nigerian government”.
@Chuc__kki: “Cos they are always immitating Hollywood and never be really authentic”.
@JEgwenu: “I hate the fact that Nollywood keep recycling the same people ,like why”.
@Ted_thek: “Oya when u produce ur own movie darling
Make it about university
We love dem high school movie”.
@namesNOTamanda: “Teenagers have more drama going on than uni students”.
@Hilson_official: “Back in the day we’ve always had uni series or movies both Yoruba movies and English movies e.g OG jenifa the movie
Unilag and some western uni suffered for location…so it’s okay to balance it with high school”.
@Taofeeqoh__: “Because they want to wear school uniforms”.
@UnilagOlodo: “Na cultism yahoo and elebolo be uni”.
@Miklaineee: “okay did yall watch Grown-ish like y’all do the others? i don’t think so. all the high school shows have longevity and if it takes off they can do the college spin off”.
@theeanimenigga: “It’s because in the western world almost everyone goes to high school but there are way less people that go to college ( a lot of people do but not the same way like high school ) and they want everyone to be able to relate so they chose high school not college “.
@Amakaachinaa: “Uni would be a good watch at least for the people preparing to be adults so they can learn the scopes and all . Also they could be working while in uni that’s not a bad idea too”.
@OmolaraOh: “Although I agree. My theory is that it’s a longevity thing. If the show becomes successful and long running, they can excuse the characters questionable behaviours for being young and developing for longer than they can if they start off at uni.”
