Mercy Kenneth might be young, but the Nollywood actress strongly believes that sometimes, revenge and pettiness are necessary. In fact, the “Drown In Tears” star further stated in her Instagram post that one does not have to be the better person. Do you agree with her?
Anyway, Mercy Kenneth does not entirely agree with her senior colleague, Mercy Johnson Okojie, based on this post. If you recall, the A-list actress recently disclosed that life had really humbled her, especially with all the recent happenings in the Nigerian movie industry. Nollywood stars, including John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, Amaechi Muonagor, and most recently, Junior Pope Odonwodo have lost their lives so far in 2024.
Mercy Johnson wrote;
“Chilling with my Twinny @theokojiekids, #odiwife”
“Life has humbled me so much and with recent happenings, I simply can’t comprehend a lot of things. I wish bad on no one, neither do I want revenge. I just want a lot of people to stay away from me…”

Anyway, there have been rumors of actors being blacklisted in the Asaba part of Nollywood. In fact, the atmosphere in that area is toxic, with reports of jealousy ruling above everything else. For instance, the much-loved Junior Pope was reportedly blacklisted, with crazy rumors that he may have had his life snuffed out by envious colleagues who used his drowning as a cover-up. There are no real friends in the Nigerian movie industry, especially within that Asaba side.
So many other Nollywood celebrities have recounted how they narrowly escaped d eath from their colleagues who attack them spiritually. Ruby Ojiakor is one of them.
But what could be the possible reasons why a young actress like Mercy Kenneth may have adopted this philosophy based on her post of “Sometimes revenge and pettiness are necessary, You don’t have to be the better person,” here are a few reasons:
Personal Experiences: There is no doubt that Mercy Kenneth may have faced certain situations from colleagues, friends and possibly relatives where she felt wronged or mistreated. This could lead to hardening of her heart into believing that revenge and pettiness are necessary for self-protection or justice.
Observation of Industry Dynamics: Mercy Kenneth is part of Nollywood so she is well aware of its dynamics. For instance, the young actress may have observed certain scenarios in which people use revenge or pettiness to gain advantage in their careers.
Influence of Peers or Mentors: Do not underestimate the power of peer pressure or influence from other actors or industry veterans who advocate for assertiveness and standing up for oneself, with revenge or pettiness their motto.
Cultural Norms: You must have observed that in some cultures, assertiveness and standing up for oneself in a way deemed as confrontational, is necessary when faced in certain situations.
Desire for Recognition or Success: Nollywood actress Mercy Kenneth may have meant that when she clearly stated, “Sometimes revenge and pettiness are necessary, You don’t have to be the better person,” assertiveness is necessary, much like the scripture in Matthew 11:12 (KJV): “11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.”
In other words, fighting back is indeed necessary in certain situations especially when dealing with the wicked.
